Russia’s GAZ Group may supply engines, cars to Cuba

MOSCOW, Jun 9 (PRIME) -- Russian car producer GAZ Group is studying different options for development of its work in Cuba, from supplies of engines for buses to exports of its Gazelle cars, trade representative to Cuba Alexander Bogatyr told PRIME Thursday.

“Some time ago, LIAZ buses with American engines were supplied to Cuba. But Cubans were unable to directly buy spare parts for the engines due to the embargo or buy them only at high prices and through third parties. Now, the issue is about supplying Russian engines produced at the Yaroslavl Motor Plant (part of GAZ Group),” he said, adding that 700 LIAZ buses should be fitted with new engines.

There also is a project for exports of GAZ Group’s chassis on the basis of which Cuban suburban and city buses should be assembled. “There are also plans for deliveries of Gazelle Next and Gazelle cars that will work as public minibus taxis,” he said.

Cuba is also at an advanced stage of talks with Russian major truck maker Kamaz, he added.
